Heroes
Guest Artist: Phil Hansen, Cello
Heroes come from all walks of life and social settings. In Le Tombeau de Couperin, Maurice Ravel dedicates each piece to a fallen soldier friend. Dmitri Shostakovich is himself the hero as one of the few Russian composers to stand up to Stalin. His Cello ConcertoNo. 1, played by international cellist Phil Hansen, is filled with irony and sarcasm, like a voice praying to the world about something that is very wrong. The season closes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s most powerful Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”. Heroic in nature, it has been played for many heroes throughout history.
This performance is a tribute to our local heroes:
The men and women of our Paramedic, Fire, R.C.M.P. and Coast Guard services.
