On the first day of February The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) will hang The National Juried Art Show. They have been working on this exhibition for over a year. This is the largest exhibition project that TOSH in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island has conducted to date. Last February they extended a national call for entry for a winter juried exhibition coinciding with the Olympic Games in Whistler/Vancouver. Approximately 60 paintings were to be juried into the exhibition by Judges Don Farrell, Merv Brandel and Gerda Hofman, three local, internationally respected artists. In order to give artists of all skill levels a chance to be exhibited, 10 additional paintings were to be drawn from a lottery of the remaining entries.
The deadline for entries was October 10, 2009. Participating artists were asked to send JPEG photo files. Hundreds of paintings from as far away as Quebec were submitted. The judges selected the paintings that will be hung in the gallery and awarded the First Prize ($2010.00) to Royden Josephson from Ashcroft, B.C. for his acrylic triptych called Olympic Suite. Second Prize ($1000.00) is awarded to Joan Skeet from North Vancouver for her mixed media painting, Scratch, and Arlene Nesbitt from Victoria receives Third Prize ($500.00) for her photomontage Midway to the End. The three winning paintings are featured in an ad in the 2010 winter edition of Galleries West a national art magazine
Seven paintings have received Honourable Mention. These artists are: Megan Arundel, Dene Croft, Dorthe Eisenhardt, Colin Spencer, Fay St. Marie, Cecile Vanwoensel and Steve Wilson. All the winners will be awarded prizes at the Opening Reception on February 10 at 7:00pm. In addition, the Town Council of Qualicum Beach will present to the three top winners commemorative vases created by First Nations artist Terry Jackson. Renown Canadian artist, Kiff Holland will speak at the reception about the importance of art in Canada. Everyone is welcome.
A full colour catalogue featuring the paintings and brief biographical profiles of exhibiting and winning artists as well as including thumbnail details photos of the all the submissions will be available for a charge of $5.00 to help support the event.
The show will hang until March 28, 2010. Exhibition paintings are available for purchase in the gallery and on our website: www.theoldschoolhouse.org
