MORE ROMP! – Now in its 12th year, Victoria’s ROMP! Festival of Independent Dance expands with new programs!

The Festival opens October 5th at the McPherson Playhouse Galleries with EIGHTEEN an exhibition of images celebrating Suddenly Dance Theatre’s 18 years of dance creation in Victoria 1992-2010.

The first weekend of live performances (Oct 16-18 at the Metro Studio Theatre) starts with the 4th edition of PRESENT/TENSE 4, featuring 10 local writers and 10 dancers; followed by CAKE ON THE STAGE where you can meet the artists and eat a piece of the delicious ROMP! cake. The new FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH program features talented dance artists under twenty interpreting the works of established choreographers mixed with short dance-films from Dance Films Association, New York. HE WAS SWIMMING THE OTHER WAY is a poignantly humourous mermaid myth by Vancouver’s DELIA BRETT.

Mid-Festival Oct 24-Nov 4: The dance-themed exhibition BODY LANGUAGE at the Martin Batchelor Gallery shows a dynamic group of Victoria’s visual artists. Using the gallery as a performance hub, DANCE/WALK features 10-days of lunchtime micro performances and evening events in the downtown core.

The second weekend of live performances (November 5-7) features the ensemble work SOLD DOUBT, a kinetically exhilarating premiere by Vancouver’s JOSH BEAMISH. Also, Suddenly Dance Theatre’s recently toured COURTYARD FOR A BIRD by DAVID FERGUSON and JUNG AH CHUNG will be shown with a premiere solo by Toronto’s DA HOSKINS. The public can join the discussion with Suddenly Dance Theatre’s GREEN ROOM, a forum to support the art of dance.
