‘CURRENT THREADS 2017’ is both the exhibition name and theme of the annual showing by a group of Vancouver Island surface design artists presenting a showcase of new and hybrid ideas. Most surface designers have a passion for exploring, experimenting and working with a variety of multiple techniques and their wide-ranging applications, from wall hangings to sculptural pieces. Those showing in this exhibition are no exception.
The artists use an array of surface design processes, some of which are painting, dyeing, waxing, quilting, stitching, fabric layering, weaving, knitting, embellishing, paper-making, felting - to name a few. Art cards and scarves as well as small textile art pieces are also on display and for sale. The exhibiting group of textile artists is the Vancouver Island Surface Design Association (VISDA), part of the International Surface Design Association. While many members have lived in countries all over the globe, they now make their homes on Vancouver Island, and the Gulf Islands.
Many of these textile artists have exhibited nationally and internationally and have wide ranging, often disparate experiences and viewpoints, and many teach and publish their work. What is common to all surface designers is that their work is rich with colour and creative energy. And what is apparent in their art is that they enjoy the risk-taking of experimentation and evolving processes each year to bring about the fascinating results for Current Threads.
