Cumberland's annual Lunar New Year Dinner and Celebration is just around the corner and residents from across the Comox Valley are invited out to the Village for an evening of food, festivities and live entertainment to mark the start of the Year of the Tiger! On Saturday February 13th at 6:00 join the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce and the Lunar New Year Committee for a colourful celebration that honours Cumberland's rich multi-cultural history and celebrates the eclectic community it is today.

This year, Cumberland's Lunar New Year Committee welcomes Pangaea Arts from Vancouver for an exciting performance that includes traditional Chinese opera and fun filled theatre sketches about Lunar New Year. Pangaea Arts is an intercultural, interdisciplinary world arts organization based in Vancouver. Pangaea Arts was formed to promote cultural interaction and the exchange of ideas between diverse communities and to introduce Canadian audiences to performance traditions from around the world. They create productions that educate by participation, encouraging audiences and artists to actively investigate different cultures and ideas.

Pangaea Arts are currently working on a theatrical dramatization about the early Chinese community of Cumberland, BC. This historical piece will combine Cantonese opera and Western theatre. This will be a collaboration between Canadian theatre artists and several Cantonese opera artists. Cumberland is scheduled to premiere in 2010.

The Year of the Tiger is a fortunate one for followers of the Lunar Calendar. The Tiger is said to be lucky vivid, lively and engaging with incredible bravery, evidenced in his willingness to engage in battle and his undying courage. (Maybe he’s so brave because he is so lucky). The Chinese say having a Tiger in the house is the very best protection against the evils of fire, burglary.

The evening will also include a Silent Auction for the Cumberland Museum and Archives Exhibit Renewal Program, fun door prizes, special Lunar New Year Gifts and a delicious dinner! The Village of Cumberland is also a generous partner in this annual event.
