Audiences attending performances of this year’s Courtenay Little Theatre pantomime, Cleopatra in de Nile, will be wowed by the spectacular stage setting for the production. It is an incredible work of design and construction for a cleverly funny show. Of course, the whole show is a culmination of the efforts of many people from the writers of the original script, Peter and Claudia Woodhall, right through to the stagehands moving set pieces during performances but credit for the set design and construction must be given to two men in particular.
Set Designer, Robert Moon, comes to the Comox Valley from a movie background, bringing a wealth of knowledge, experience and creativity with him. He spent many years creating Special Effects and Set Designs for movies such as the "The Chronicles of Riddick", "Look Who's Talking", "Alive" and Atom Egoyan’s "The Sweet Hereafter" to name just a few, in his work with the Vancouver Film Industry. Moon’s special effects include a pyramid that is created from cardboard yet looks incredibly realistic, with pillars and obelisks, hieroglyphics and icons to reflect the Panto's Egyptian theme. Director, Peter Woodhall, was amazed at Moon’s depiction of his vision and says, “The colour and size of this amazing creation magnifies the stage and will delight your senses."
Producer, Terry Penney, took on the task of creating a stage that would augment Moon’s design. He designed and supervised the building of a rake stage to let audiences see every nook and cranny of the spectacular set. It incorporates a rise of 30 inches from front to back of the 18ft stage. He and Moon also used roof trusses in a most ingenious manner, to put a 3D effect into a flat surface for the pyramid. And as producer, Penney has a host of other jobs that keep him well and truly busy, facilitating all aspects of putting a show together.
The antics of all in Cleopatra in de Nile will be a wonderful experience to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. It is most definitely a show worth taking the whole family to see. Remember, panto tickets also make great stocking stuffers. Once again, the New Year’s Eve show also offers audience members an opportunity to have their photos taken with the cast. Don’t miss it! Cleopatra in de Nile is a must see show!
