An open dialogue with Kavita Maharaj and George McFaul The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are woven into the history, philosophy and practice of Yoga like a string of precious pearls. These ancient aphorisms, only 96 in all, comprise the cosmological heart of Yoga. They offer to modern practitioners and Yoga enthusiasts a practical glimpse of the essential wisdom and understanding of Sri Patanjali's clear, unerring vision.
These 96 precious pearls have been translated and commented upon perhaps as much as any other text in world literature. Out of the mists of mythical origins and the span of millennia, the crystal clear grammatical construction of the Sanskrit verses calls out for understanding. We hope, with our Four Sutra Salons, to hear that call, and respond in conversation threaded through a String of Pearls.
The Yoga Sutras are divided into four Pada (feet), or chapters. It is our design to host Four Conversations, each dedicated to one of these chapters. Drawing upon select Sutras from each chapter we will discuss, listen, ask, respond, sound, and hold silence with their possible meanings for us, here and now.
Please join us. Kavita and George welcome your curiosity and your insight to our conversational sangha. Atha Yoga Nusasanam Each of the four salons will engage one of the chapters of the Yoga Sutras. These are: • I Samadhi Pada - Yoga is Now • II Sadhana Pada - Paths to Enlightenment • III Vibhuti Pada - Expanding into Union • IV Kaivalya Pada - Absolute Freedom On our first of four discussion nights (April 21st) we will explore the ultimate meaning of Yoga as presented in the first chapter of the Yoga Sutras. The Sutras we will base our discussions on are: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.12, 1.33 and 1.39. Understanding what Yoga ultimate meaning and truth is, is an important first step in the journey to enlightenment. On our second of four discussion nights (April 28th) we will look at the Paths of Yoga presented by Patanjali. These of paths of Living Yoga in Action, the means to enlightenment. The Sutras for discussion will be II.1, II.3, II.29, II.42 and II.46 On our third of four discussion nights (May 5) we will be focussed on the three 'internal' or spiritual limbs of Yoga, and their expansion into Samyana (the combined practice of ultimate Union). We will look at Sutras III.1, III.2, III.3, III.4, III.7, III.51 and III.55 (or 56, depending on the version). One our final of the four discussion nights (May 12th) we will consider the inconsiderable, the mind that is and is not! The door of enlightenment. Sutras for discussion are IV.4, IV.6, IV.10, IV.23, IV.33, IV.34. We will also take some time for overview reflection and try to take it all in!
