Laughter Yoga is a unique concept where everyone can laugh for no reason, without relying on humor, jokes or comedy. The one hour Laughter Yoga sessions use guided playful exercises where simulated laughter soon becomes authentic and contagious laughter. The body doesn't know the laughter is fake, even though the brain might. When the brain signals the body to laugh, the body doesn't care why; those feel-good hormones (endorphins) are released and stress is relieved. This quickly boosts the immune system, increases circulation, lowers blood pressure and also provides emotional and psychological release for an overall feeling of well-being.
No yoga mats are needed. The reason it's called 'Laughter Yoga' is because it combines laughter exercises with yoga breathing. This brings more oxygen to the body and the brain making one feel more energetic and healthy.
Alan Pattinson and Susan Baker, Certified Laughter Yoga Leaders, will co-lead the sessions. Last December they led a well-attended session for seniors at d'Esterre House and more recently both residents and staff participated in a Laughter Yoga session at Glacier View Lodge. G.V. Director of Resident Lifestyle & Community Programs, Liz Friis, called the Laughter Yoga session a "success."
