The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra is busily rehearsing for their next delightful concert timed perfectly to be a portal to the Festive Season for the Mid-Island, welcoming the energy, the magic and celebration of Christmas. Like Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” we visit Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas future but through music. While sitting in the present we can bask in the wonder of the past and the incredible music created in the Baroque period, delight in music of the present with a contemporary composer, and project through our minds the wonder of what is to come in the years ahead, for we all have dreams and visions to be fulfilled. The future includes the dreams and aspirations of those student musicians and members who are being mentored by the NCO, the Mid-Island’s very own community orchestra. So imagine if you will...
... A banquet hall set in a magnificent Baroque palace. While in reality you sit in the Brechin United Church in Nanaimo, above you flickering and sparkling chandeliers hang majestically from an ornately designed ceiling, and before you is a huge polished table set for the Christmas Season, adorned with candles, decorations, china and silverware fit for a king or queen, all awaiting a feast.
The menu: inspiring, cheerful music! The chef: Karl Rainer. The sous-chefs: Musicians of the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra.
First, served by the chef, is a little appetiser, juicy titbits of information about the composers and their music, followed by the delicious main course, Christmas Concertos by two Italian-born Baroque composers; Giuseppe Torelli and Giuseppe Sammartini. The tantalising, delightful dessert (sweet) comes with the Little Suite by German Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann and the Denbigh Suite by contemporary composer Gordon Jacob. After-dinner relaxation is provided by Mozart’s ever popular, familiar and delightful Sinfonia Concertante featuring James Mark and Karl Rainer as soloists.
This is the power of music; to imagine, to sense and to feel a time and a place. This feast of Baroque music, provided by growing community orchestra, is perfect for heralding in the Christmas Season with all its festivities. Take a seat and enjoy the feast!
