This is BRFM's 4th year of serving the community. This is Nanaimo's food-oriented market promoting the 100 mile diet and connecting the people of our community with the farmers in our region who grow and raise the food we eat, as well as small-scale food processors and unique artisans. Farmers markets throughout Canada find that true "farmers" markets flourish when the focus on food is a minimum of 75%, and that is what this market adheres to.

A bit about the purpose, vision and goals of farmers’ markets.
As background, it is important to be aware that in 1900, 90% of Canadians were involved in agriculture and now it is less than 4%. In 1960, 60% of our food was grown on Vancouver Island and now it is less than 6%. These “facts” put farming, food, agri-culture and land use into a broader perspective!

The purpose of our farmers’ market is:
to bring people together in our community within the context of food, farming, health, nutrition and relationship. This also provides an opportunity for people to reconnect with themselves, each other, the earth, soil, water, air and sun which are some of the many elements employed by our local farmers and food producers in order to bring some of the less than 6% of our food grown on Vancouver Island!

The vision is: for us all to become re-aquainted with our world and how our food, food production and eating of food fits into the world and all it’s peoples and creatures.

The goal is: that from this place of awareness of the inter-relationship of all things that we continue to make individual changes leading to cultural shifts that move us all in a direction that is more harmonious and sustainable.
