he Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Society (VIMSS) and the six Rotary Clubs in the Comox Valley and Campbell River have joined forces to organize the first Biathlon Snowshoe Blast to be held Sunday, March 28 at the Nordic Centre on Mount Washington.
The Biathlon Snowshoe Blast will be a major fundraiser for both the Vancouver Island Mountain Sports, a non-profit society assisting emerging athletes, and Rotary District 5020’s 2010 Polio Plus campaign.
Open to anyone over the age of 14, this Snowshoe Relay is a fun-filled competition at the Nordic Centre’s new biathlon course. Consisting of six person relay teams, the event has five different categories, with each team member walking or running a section of the course on snowshoes.
Participants also get to shoot an official biathlon rifle used in international and Olympic competitions.
The Snowshoe Blast’s entry fee, as part of the fundraiser, is based on each team member raising a minimum of $100 in pledges, or $600 in pledges per team.
Prizes will be awarded to the person and team with the most pledges, the team with the best guestimation, the fastest time, and a number of other criteria.
“As the event’s title sponsor, Mount Washington is very pleased to be hosting this joint fundraiser with the Comox Valley and Campbell River Rotary Clubs and VIMSS.”
The five relay team categories, with a maximum of 10 teams in each category, are: Rotary Clubs; High schools; Military and/or ex-armed forces,; Business or community organizations; and a competitive category for serious athletes.
