Based on Maurice Maeterlinck's 1895 play, Intérieur, The Life Inside is a unique piece of music theatre created specifically for the Belfry and the largest production in our history.

Like their celebrated adaptation of Crime and Punishment, Tait and composer Pankanea have crafted a highly stylized, yet cinematically performed piece that engages both the heart and the mind. Peasants on a country estate must deliver tragic news regarding a young girl to the members of her family, whom we see through the windows of their home. The tensions between life and death, happiness and profound sadness, blissful ignorance and painful knowledge give The Life Inside a bittersweet, aching quality, and a connection to a universal wisdom as old as man.


About the Creators

James and Joelysa met while working with the Leaky Heaven Circus. Together they have adapted a number of pieces including Crime and Punishment and Old Goriot. Their work blurs the line between song, dance and text, while examining the human experience in theatre.
