One of the world’s most prestigious Ballet companies steeped in the traditions of Classical Russian Ballet. Astoundingly beautiful dancers with superior technique …This company, rich in passion and rhythm brings the culture of Cuba to Nanaimo.
Fidel Castro took control of Cuba in 1959 with a commitment to make the arts available to everyone… The Revolution, marked the beginning of Ballet in Cuba. Founded in 1948 by Alicia Alonso, the National Ballet of Cuba received $200,000 from the Castro Government…and so their illustrious history began. Government funding for the Ballet continues to this day.
The Ballet has performed in over 60 countries and received hundreds of international awards. As loyal as Castro has been to Cuba, Alicia Alonso at age 88 and nearly blind, is to the Ballet Nacional de Cuba.
The 2012 tour of Ballet Nacional de Cuba will begin on 31st of January when a contingent of 35 principals and soloists selected from the full company arrive in Victoria, BC direct from Cuba. After two performances of a specially created program: The Magic of Dance (pas de deux and highlights from famous Cuban ballet repertoire) in Victoria on February 3rd and 4th, the company will continue on to Nanaimo, Kelowna, Banff, Alberta and Chilliwack. Playing in six Western Canadian cities, it is expected that almost 20,000 dance aficionados will experience the unique beauty and technical bravura of this world-class international ensemble.
