Bach’s St. John Passion is an oratorio that derives its subject from chapters of the Gospel of St. John that recount the last days of Jesus’ life. First performed in 1724, it is a vivid and intense work whose theatricality is framed perfectly by Bach’s sublime musical prose. Smaller, shorter, more intimate and more dramatic than the better known of Bach’s passions - St. Matthew - “John” is a musical experience not to be missed. A rare opportunity to hear one of Bach’s sacred masterpieces performed on period instruments.
About the Victoria Baroque Players:
“At last is has arrived: Victoria’s very own professional, no compromises, full meal deal baroque ensemble” • James Young, Music in Victoria
A Victoria-based period instrument ensemble, the Victoria Baroque Players formed with the mission of bringing high-quality performances of Baroque music to Vancouver Island audiences, using the abundance of local skill and talent. The musicians are all from Victoria and nearby areas and are well-established figures on the west coast music scene. Its individual members regularly perform with the Pacific and Portland Baroque Orchestras, and the Vancouver Island, Vancouver, and Victoria Symphonies. The group's wind players – flutist Soile Stratkauskas, bassoonist Katrina Russell, and natural horn player Andrew Clark – have years of collective experience working with world-class period instrument ensembles in Europe, including the English Consort, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.
Since its formation in April 2011, the Victoria Baroque Players has become an established part of the Victoria's music scene and has gained an enthusiastic audience base. The ensemble has played a series of concerts based around Bach's cantatas at the Church of St. John the Divine, performed in the Early Music Society of the Islands and Early Music Vancouver series’, the Victoria Conservatory of Music's Oratorio Programme concerts, and the Victoria Children's Choir's Classical Christmas Concert. They are now in their second full season.
