Set in 1915 in what was formerly the underutilized Brandon Provincial Reformatory For Boys but re-designated as the Brandon Asylum, housing over six-hundred patients, our story focuses on the circumstances of several women, typically poor, homeless, immigrant, or wards of the court.
Jenny Trout, trained yet not yet practicing as a doctor, and her passionate young journalist friend, Elizabeth, who risks everything by going undercover, come face to face with their discovery of forced sterilization on Canada’s marginalized population. They turn for help to Emily Murphy, magistrate and suffragette who was instrumental in having women acknowledged as persons under the law. What they uncover is worse than they could have imagined.
