Friday, September 29th, 2017
10:00 AM to 11:30 AM

When a New Orleans group called the Original Dixieland Jass Band (sic) travelled to New York City in 1917 to make the first jazz recordings, one of the songs that they chose was written by a Canadian-born composer named Shelton Brooks.

VIU music professor, jazz trumpeter, arranger and composer, Greg Bush, will speak on the original recordings and their historical importance, and on the importance of Canada's contribution to jazz music in general.

The presentation will also feature a performance of Brook’s rowdy “Darktown Strutters Ball” by the VIU student jazz ensemble, and offer the opportunity to join in a New Orleans jazz-style singalong of “Happy Birthday.” Get ready to celebrate one hundred years of jazz records!
