This event is sponsored by the Damascus to Duncan working group, who is tirelessly fund raising to have the required money in place to support our refugee Iraqi family who is presently stranded in Syria. They are UN status refugees who are awaiting their last interview at the embassy, before being flown to Canada.
This family has been through the war with Iraq, the embargo, sectarian violence and the American occupation. The children have never experienced peace. Saif, the son, wants nothing more than to learn how to play soccer. The teenage daughter, Shahad has not been to school for four years since she was injured in a car bomb attack at her school in Baghdad.
Saad, the father, and Ilham, the mother want their children to have a chance at life. They want to become "good Canadians," and leave their bitter past behind.
As Saad says, "God Willing," they will be here soon! In the meantime, come out with us, dance, eat, watch incredible tribal bellydancers and bid in the silent auction.
