A Blast from the Past!

Mary Byrne (Flute and Bass Flute), Karel Roessingh (Piano), Joey Smith (Bass), Damian Graham (Drums), and Doug Hensley (Guitar) will join forces to present some of the most tuneful and immediate music ever written.
The concert will feature the Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Trio: a brilliant cross-over work for classical and jazz musicians which topped the pop charts through the mid-1970s. Alongside, the concert will present four of Martin Beaser’s Mountain Songs for flute and guitar – written in a style that’s a little bit Joni Mitchell, a little bit 16th century – and treats from the jazz repertoire.
Shall we list the firsts? As near as we can tell, this is the first fully collaborative concert of VCM-Camosun Jazz and Classical Music Faculty hosted at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. By all indications, this will be the first complete performance of Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano in Victoria. We believe this to be the first public performance of the opening set of Martin Beaser’s Mountain Songs for flute and guitar to be given in Victoria.
We are so excited to be getting together to present this concert character-filled music!
