4th Annual Cardiac Café
Saturday, February 23rd, 2013
10:00 AM to 12:00 AM
Many women are shocked to learn that heart disease is our biggest health threat. Over 80% of women have at least one major risk factor for heart disease, which kills more women than men each year. Heart disease also kills six times more women every year than breast cancer. In fact, more women die from heart disease than from all cancers combined.
At this popular interactive presentation (back by popular demand for the 4th year in a row!) you'll learn about women's heart attack symptoms that may surprise you, tests and treatments that could save you, personal lessons learned from a heart attack survivor to inspire you, as well as how to understand your own unique risk factors and some heart-healthy ways to address them starting right now. Pre-registration is required - your registration includes coffee, tea and delicious heart-smart brunch goodies. Sign up with your girlfriends and join us at UVic for a unique women's health event.
Guest speaker Carolyn Thomas is a Victoria heart attack survivor and a 2008 graduate of the WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium for Women With Heart Disease at the world-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota - the first Canadian ever invited to attend this prestigious community advocacy training. Since returning home from Mayo, she has spoken to thousands of women (and some men!) in her mission to help raise awareness of our #1 killer. She was named by "Our Bodies Ourselves" of Boston as one of their 2009 "Women's Health Heroes, and her award-winning blog "Heart Sisters" - www.myheartsisters.org - has attracted over 700,000 visitors from 199 countries so far. In 2012, she was named to the "Top 10 Heart Disease Online Influencers List" by ShareCareNow, a health education partnership co-founded by Dr. Oz.
