F On February 15th The Historic White Eagle Hall will be transformed into a two level Gypsy Swing Hot Club, featuring Van Django! Vancouver's answer to gypsy-swing, Van Django will be joined by the Chris Sartisohn Group, and a fabulous "Montage" of well known locals; Adam Dobres, Paul Dowd, Oliver Swain, and special guest Daniel Lapp.
This year's Djangofest combines the best music with some delectable choices for your palette. All local sponsors; Hoyne Brewery and Unsworth Vineyards will provide the libations, and Pizza Prima Strata and The Whole Beast serve up Gourmet Pizza and Chacuterie. The Swing Dance Association of Victoria will kick it all off with a free Dance Workshop and Competition, so grab your dancing shoes get there early to pick up some fancy footwork. The Upper Hall will be a swingin' cabaret with tables and dance floor, while the Lower hall gets down in an acoustic jam.
is a highly entertaining acoustic string ensemble made up of four talented and eclectic Canadian musicians; Cameron Wilson (violin), Budge Schachte (Guitar), Finn Manniche (Guitar/Cello), and Brent Gubbels (Acoustic Bass). The music is punchy, driving, and rhythmically inventive, combining a wealth of musical influences while maintaining the gypsy jazz sound made famous by the 1930's Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Since forming in 1998, Van Django have toured extensively in Canada, the USA, Europe and China, including repeat performances at Djangofest Northwest (DFNW) where they shared a double bill concert with the John Jorgenson Quintet as well as opening for the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Romane.
The Chris Sartisohn Group:
is known for their infectious melodies and hypnotic rhythms, features virtuosic Jazz Manouche guitars, soulful horns and swingin' bass. They can be seen playing in Victoria's pubs, clubs, restaurants and lounges, as well as on the international festival circuit. Known locally as the fiery lead guitarist for Cold Cut Combo, Chris Sartisohn's unique and expressive playing has been compared to some of the world's greatest guitarists and he's toured extensively as a member of the Robin Nolan Trio and playing with Andreas Oberg, Howard Alden, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Jon Jorgenson (Elton John, Hellecasters). His musical journeys have taken him across North America, as well as Latin America, Europe, Iceland, and China.
is Victoria's newest Gypsy Swing group, featuring Adam Dobres, Oliver Swain and Paul Dowd, with special guest Daniel Lapp. The groups works it down to the bone with rare Django, original and Depression Era jazz, delivered by the fleet fingers of some of Victoria's best loved instrumentalists.
