The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) is gearing up for the annual Grand Prix d’Art painting race and Art in Action Art Fair on Saturday, July 28.

Art in Action is an annual event held outside the arts centre that attracts a large number of community residents as well as visitors to our area who come to view and purchase distinctive artwork and enjoy a free concert. https://www.facebook.com/grandprixpaintingrace/

Art in Action provides a creative environment in which artists and craft workers can demonstrate their skills and engage with the public. The fair hosts over 50 artists in diverse disciplines such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, calligraphy, illustration, textiles, woodwork, metalwork, jewellery, ceramics and glass.

From 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. visitors can tour this interactive arts festival in a large outside venue around the arts centre, and on this special day the Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market will move their location here to join in the fun! As well, the entire arts centre, which is home to 30 Resident Artists, three galleries and a gift shop representing 125 Vancouver Island artists, will be open for leisurely browsing.

The festivities will be highlighted by live music on our outdoor stage as well as our annual en plein air painting race that takes place throughout our picturesque town. The main concert (free admission) will be presented from 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. and will feature the Maureen Washington quartet. Enjoy the sounds of jazz, funk, rhythm and blues and pop performed by an all-star ensemble led by this fantastic, Victoria-based vocalist. http://www.maureenwashington.ca/ Bring your lawn chair!

We are also hosting our annual Grand Prix d’Art painting race on this same day-- Saturday, July 28. This event will entice artists from around Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland out of their studios and onto the streets of Qualicum Beach to paint their visions of our beautiful community from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. For twenty-five years this event has attracted en plein air painters of all levels and mediums as well as hundreds of spectators. Each en plein air painter is assigned a location by lottery, and their work has to represent or be inspired by something or someone that is visible from the assigned location.

Visitors are encouraged to watch the process and the progress of the artists at the various locations, which are all within walking distance of The Old School House Arts Centre in downtown Qualicum Beach.

The painters must complete their work within the three-hour limit and have the paintings in display condition, titled and priced for sale at the arts centre no later than one hour after completion. Over $1,000 in cash and prizes will the presented at 3:30 PM.

As The St. Mark’s Fair is held on this same day, the last Saturday in July is always one of the busiest and most exciting summer Saturdays in Qualicum Beach.

Don't miss it!
