If a locavore eats locally grown produce, what do you call someone who wears locally grown and hand-tended clothes? Mid-island residents will soon have a unique opportunity to find out.
A grand event at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre on 101 Gordon Street in Nanaimo on September 10 and 11 will entice adults and children to learn more about the intriguing world of textiles. The two day event showcases the rich history of Vancouver Island’s fibre arts heritage. The lively fibre arts community thriving on Vancouver Island has many arms. Local farms provide top quality fleeces. Local artists create clothing, linens, blankets, art and much more with yarn, fibre, textiles and fabric that come from around the world and right here on our doorstep.
The Vancouver Island Showcase opens from 1 -8 pm Friday Sept. 10 and on Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm.
More than twenty vendors from the island and further afield in BC will be selling yarns, fleeces, threads, and fabulous hand created cloth. Demonstrations of spinning, knitting, weaving, and a kids’ area will highlight each day. Whether you want to renew childhood memories, shop for gifts, or learn more about the world of fibre arts, you’ll find many reasons to attend the exciting activities. Admission at the door: Adults $5 per day or $8 for two days; Children $3 for one, $5 for two.
On Saturday at 5 pm, a Fashion Fiesta gala evening crowns the two-day affair!
The celebration includes four outstanding events. An art exhibit features exquisitely detailed creations. A banquet precedes a presentation by internationally renowned guest speaker, fibre artist Shannon Wardroper. The evening’s festivities conclude with a fashion show of imaginative and colourful clothing created with the talents of Vancouver Island artists. Tickets for the event, sponsored by The Vancouver Island Fibre Arts Society, a non-profit organization, are available for $65 at: http://www.porttheatre.com
Who are fibre artists? Visualize fleeces from sheep, alpaca, llamas, goats and rabbits. Picture luxurious mohair, cashmere, and rare qiviut from the elusive musk-ox. Imagine the rich colours and textures of silk. Consider the beauty of linen, hemp, ramie, and cotton. New fibres from bamboo and soy entice eager hands to form textiles. Yarns or felted fibres create fashionable garments, embellished with careful style. Skilful and imaginative fibre artists produce one-of-a kind articles; fun socks, hats, or lowly tea towels. Imagination provides endless possibilities. at this inspired textile affair with demonstrations, vendors, children’s activities, and a spinning circle.See www.vancouverislandfibrearts.com for more details.
