The Insomniacs (Saturday, September 5 - 7:30pm)
From Portland, Oregon, The Insomniacs (Vyasa Dodson vocalist/guitarist, Dean Mueller bass, Alex Shakeri keyboard and Dave Melyan drums) play vintage instruments and channel a blues style from the 1950’s with their joyous, yet highly contagious musical sound and irresistible sense of swing. They exploded on to the scene out of nowhere in 2007 garnering critical praise and industry recognition from the blues community with a 2008 Blues Music Award nomination for “Best New Artist Debut”, as well as a 2007 Muddy Award for “Best Contemporary Blues Act”. The Insomniacs’ original intoxicating formula is a mix of blues, swing, jump and roots rock, delivering what is sure to become instant classics that have crowds dancing the night away!
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears (Sunday, September 6 - 7:30pm)
This eight piece band, led by the irrepressible Joe Lewis, has come storming out of Austin, Texas with their latest CD, “Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is.” Esquire Magazine listed Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears as one of the “ten bands to break out at 2009’s South by South West festival”. With groovy guitars, sexy horns, raw up-tempo rhythms and a ball of energy guiding them centre stage with a voice that recalls James Brown, Oddis Redding and Lightnin‘ Hopkins. The Honeybears’ rhythm section knows how to lay down a wicked groove and plays together as a unit instead of seeking individual glory. Their groove is deep and fierce and this stew is really beginning to simmer.
The 15th annual Vancouver Island Blues Bash also presents three afternoons of free admission performances from noon – 5:15pm on Saturday, Sept. 5, Sunday, Sept. 6 and Monday, Sept. 7. Some of Vancouver Island’s best blues and R&B bands are featured: Gerry Barnum Band • Cruel Shoes • The PushBand • Soul Shakers • Deb Rhymer Band • Bloozecan • Summer & the Sinners • Jason Buie Band • The Kingmixers • Paul Black & TAXI • Bill Johnson Band • The Midnights.
